Rogue River Valley - Oregon Travel Guide

Oregon Rivers - Oregon Information

Columbia, Willamette, Rogue Rivers, and many others offer transportation to the sea. Steamboats sailed the Willamette River and the Columbia River as early as 1850. The first full ships cargo of wheat, went from Portland, Oregon to Liverpool, England in 1883 when the world began receiving the fish, grain, lumber, and livestock Oregon was ready to deliver.

Vast rivers provide more than transportation. Dammed rivers are the source of abundant electric power and water to irrigate farms east of the Cascades.

Timber is still important: A quarter of Oregon State is National Forest land.

Columbia Gorge Area Dam

Bonneville Lock and Dam

The dam consists of three parts, one spillway and two powerhouses. It has an overall lenght of 3463 feet and extends across Columbia River to Washington State.
On the Oregon side is a five story visitors center and underwater windows into the fish ladders. All fish are counted by personel, as they climb the ladder to get over the dam.
During the Salmon Run season you can view large Salmon going up the ladder several at a time.

Hood River, Oregon

Many curse the winds of Hood River.
In the summer, the hot air rising over the desert to the East sucks cool air up the Columbia River Gorge from the Pacific Ocean. The winds are incessant and gusts can whip the river into white caps.

Hood River is the windsurfing capital of America. People come from all over the world to catch wind as it roars through the Gorge.
In early summer, the boardshops, roll into town, unfurl their sails, zip up their wetsuits, and launch themselves into the windswept water. High waves whipped up by gale force winds provide perfect launching pads for rocketing skyward.
