For information, call (541) 382-4754.
Bend, Oregon lies in the Western edge of the Great Basin, a region that stretches from the Cascade Range to the Rocky Mountains and is refered to as the "high desert", because of its high altitude and lack of water.
The Museum brings the cultured and natural history of the region into focus. With its main building as a "Spirit of the West Gallery", a walk through time line of western history. Life size Indian encampments, pioneer wagons, a boomtown, and a gold mine.
The High Desert Museum exists to help people of all ages explore and understand the cultures, history and wildlife of the High Desert region. The museum is funded exclusively by visitors, members and donors and features indoor and outdoor exhibits, changing art shows and a variety of animal habitats.
The region comes alive in the Desertarium where live animals of the region are in their natural settings. A pioneer homestead complete with a garden, a replica of a steam-driven saw mill, all round out the outdoor exhibits.

Today, several of the buildings are still standing.
