Snakes - Southern Oregon

Southern Oregon's only poisonous snake is the rattlesnake. Both Western and Timber rattlers are found in the area. Rattlesnakes are usually found on south rocky slopes in inland areas. They are sometimes territorial, but will not pursue you. Don't step on one and you will be fine, though hikers are encouraged to carry a snakebite kit. Wear boots in tall grass.

Campers may also have to deal with porcupines, raccoons, skunks, mountain lions (cougars) and an occasional black bear. Since a ban on hound hunting became law a few years back, encounters between humans and large predators like bears and cougars have been on the increase.

Children should be taught not to scream or run at the sight of a cougar, since the cat will interpret them as prey. Black bears are generally not aggressive toward humans, but if one wants your lunch, don't argue.

Don't be too concerned about wildlife dangers. Predator attacks only happen a couple times a year, while dozens of people die from drowning.

During dry periods in July and August, many areas of forest are closed to the public because of fire danger.

Obey all signs.

Entering a closed area carries a maximum jail term of 18 months and a fine of $5,000. Actually starting a fire is felony arson.

Except in emergency conditions, improved campgrounds remain open all summer.
