Articles from the Historical Society in Josephine County Oregon

Quartz Mining in Josephine County

2/2 - END

Much of Grants Pass was built upon mining capital. A large percentage of all the early businessmen in this city and county either owned a mine or had an interest in one.

Many of those same businessmen who could not get away, hired men to dig tunnels or work his mine for a percentage.

Many great quartz mines have been discovered in Josephine County and are too numerous to list all of them. Some of the more notable mines are the "Greenback", "Granite Hill" Eureka, Almeda, Benton, Ida, Lucky Queen, and the Boswell to name a few.

The Josephine County Historical Society has a copy of the Oregon Metal Handbook for Josephine County that lists the names of over 400 plus mines. These mines of all the various mining districts of our county include placer, Copper, quartz as well as Chromium and Nickel.
