singing in the high school male quartet and sang first tenor. Martin's skin was fair and thin with the result that he was florid in complexion. His coloring came to the notice of a fellow student, Laura Thomas, who gave Martin the name of "Rosie Posie" which stuck thru his high school days. It was shortened to "Rosie" his final two years.

In 1898, Martin's senior year at Grants Pass, he tied Josephine Stites for a grade of 96%. Because of the tie, they didn't have a valedictorian for the graduation exercises.

After living on the Mitchell farm about a year, Martin persuaded his father to purchase forty-acres of O&CRR land priced a $6.50 an acre. The land was located next door to the east of Shelby Mitchell where Gaffney way is today.

J.W. Heston and Martin cleared five acres of timber to get enough lumber to build a small house during Martin's summer vacation. Martin was also working at a sawmill and made arrangement to take lumber for his wages.

The high school course of study at the time Martin entered was only three years. After Martin's graduation from Grants Pass high school in 1898, Aunt Minnie, Martin's mother's younger sister came for a visit.

She, her twin sister, and a brother had graduated from the San Jose State Normal School in California and were teachers in that state. After talking to his aunt, Martin also decided to make San Jose his college of choice and teaching would be his career. Martin had saved a few dollars ... Continued - Page 5
