the University of Michigan and Grants Pass proud, but every sports minded kid in the nation held him in awe as well. One of the greatest tributes ever paid to Willie Heston, and there were many, was the tribute paid to him in 1928 by the very popular sports writer of the day, Grantland Rice. It reflected the sentiments of anyone who can remember watching him play.

What's that is someone kidding me?
Has time flown back beyond the years?
Where vanished youth still hears again
The roaring echo of old cheers?
The surging line gets under way
The charging tackles and the guards,
As Sweeney's spirals split the sky,
And Heston runs for forty yards.
