legislature for the first bridge at the foot of Sixth Street. Since Grants Pass was the new county seat and governed by a county court system, the county authorized a bridge across the Applegate near Slate Creek and both bridges were completed by September of 1886, opening up mining on a much larger scale than ever before.

GOLD PRODUCTION IN DOLLARS Records of the U.S. Mint show production in dollars of $16,816,275.39 for the entire state of Oregon during the years 1848 to 1882. It is estimated that at least half that amount was mined in Southern Oregon. The total real value can never be accurately ascertained as many of the miners hoarded their gold and much of the gold that was mined by the Chinese was shipped back to China.

From 1882 to 1899 Gold productions for southwestern Oregon amounted to $5,808,831.11. Between 1900 and 1912, southwestern Oregon produced $5,448,941. 1906 was the peak year showing $600,000 produced.
