Pruning Shrubs
Overgrown Bushes
Pruning or trimming
First decide the shape you want the bush/shrub to be eventually.
Next, follow some pruning basics:
Cut away no more than a third of the bush per year.
When thinning overly dense growth, cut away any branches that cross over another
or are growing toward the middle of the bush.
Flowering shrubs - Always prune after the blosoms are gone.
Always take a moment to look over your work. Don't get impatient when cutting.
Trimming and pruning is a process as well as a technique.
You can always come back and trim a little more off later.
Depending on the species, you may have some pretty tough decisions to make.
Certain bushes require a little more imagination and patience to create a great
looking product, some just need to be replaced.
