Rogue River Valley, Oregon - Southern Oregon is divided into three main river basins; the Umpqua River, the Rogue River, and the Klamath Basin. The Umpqua meets the Pacific at Reedsport, the Rogue mouth is near Gold Beach, and the Klamath empties at the Redwoods National Park in Northern California. All three rivers have their headwaters in the Cascade Mountains on the slopes of Crater Lake, Oregon's only national park. The Rogue River is a designated National Scenic River, and formed much of the backdrop for the Meryl Streep movie "The River Wild." Jet boat trips and white water rafting are very popular.

Rapid Job Growth in Jackson County

The Rogue Valley of Today and Tomorrow
by Ainoura Oussenbec
Oregon Employment Department

Along with rapid population growth, the rate of job growth in Jackson County from 1990 to 2000 (according to covered employment data from the Oregon Employment Department) outpaced the job growth rate for Oregon. Jackson County's jobs increased by 35.8 percent, while Oregon's increased by 30.1 percent. Even the annual average unemployment rate in Jackson County, traditionally above the state level, went down to almost the same level as the state's in 2000 and then to the same level in 2001.
Thus, the two last years, 2000 and 2001, as far as job growth and unemployment rates go, were unusually positive for Jackson County. They might be indicative of a long-term trend of improving economic health and stability in the area.
However, Josephine County did not share the same impressive rate of employment growth, with the increase in jobs at 23.4 percent. The county's average unemployment rate in 1990-2000 consistently and significantly rose above the state level (the difference ranging from 1.6% to 4%), and its income and wage levels, on average, are lower than in the neighboring Jackson County and in Oregon. Josephine County still seems to be working through the major structural changes which have affected most of Oregon in the past 20 or so years.
Like many other counties in Oregon, Josephine County's economy has strongly relied on natural resource-based industries - wood and lumber products and agriculture.
The role of these sectors has been diminishing, not only in the county but in Oregon in general. It is a major structural change that may take some time to work through the economy and to reallocate the workforce to new jobs and occupations.
The manufacturing sector, which is generally considered more sensitive to recessions than some other sectors, still has a prominent role in the county's economy. Josephine County's services sector has not had the advantages of the nationally renowned Shakespeare festival in Jackson County to offset the diminishing employment in traditional industries.
However, the people in Josephine County seem to have compensated for the relatively soft employment market of recent years by focusing their energies on creating employment for themselves. According to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, proprietors' income in Josephine County in 2000 was 28.2 percent as large as the income from salaries and wages, a considerably higher level than 20.7 percent for Jackson County and 12.6 percent for Oregon.

Rogue River Valley, Oregon - The Siskiyou Mountains stretch between the Cascade Mountains and the Coast Range at the California border. The entire area is more vertical than most other parts of the state, which leads to numerous waterfalls, lots of whitewater rapids, and some spectacular scenery. Rogue River Valley is outside the main population centers of the state and the area has a very rural flavor. Major industries are tourism, wood products and agriculture. The climate is generally milder and more Mediterranean than North Western Oregon. Average rainfallis about 20 % lower and the temperatures are a bit higher.
